The Process

Every successful project begins with understanding.

Rather than moving directly into design or construction, Arbolith begins by creating alignment between site conditions, project goals, budget realities, and the people involved.
The process below provides a framework for moving from initial ideas to completed construction.

This framework gives each project a clear sequence while allowing room for the realities of site, budget, design, and construction to shape the work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Questions often arise before a project begins. The answers below provide an overview of how Arborlith approaches planning, design, and construction.

Do I need complete plans before reaching out?
No. Many projects begin with an idea, a property, or a challenge to solve. Early conversations help establish goals, feasibility, budget, and next steps before significant design work begins.

Do you work on remodels and additions, or only new homes?
Both. While every project is different, the same principles apply: understanding existing conditions, identifying opportunities, and aligning design with construction from the start.

What is design-build?
Design-build is an integrated approach where design and construction inform one another throughout the process. This creates greater continuity, clearer decision-making, and fewer surprises during construction.

Are you an architect?
No. Arborlith is not an architectural firm, and Karl Manteuffel is not currently a licensed architect. Depending on the project, Arborlith may provide design, preconstruction, and construction services directly, or collaborate with licensed architects, engineers, and consultants as needed.

Why work with Arborlith?
Arborlith bridges the gap between design and construction. By considering site conditions, budget, materials, and buildability early, projects can move forward with greater clarity and alignment.

Do you provide design services, construction services, or both?
Depending on the project, Arborlith may provide design, preconstruction planning, construction management, or a fully integrated design-build process. The level of involvement is tailored to the project's needs.

Can you work with my architect, designer, or consultant?
Absolutely. Collaboration is a core part of the studio's approach. Arborlith regularly works alongside architects, engineers, designers, craftspeople, and specialty consultants.

How early should I begin planning?
Earlier than most people think. Decisions made before design begins often have the greatest impact on project success. Starting early creates more opportunities and fewer constraints.

How do budgets fit into the process?
Budget is considered from the beginning. Early conversations help align goals, priorities, and investment levels so design decisions can be made with confidence.

What happens after I submit an inquiry?
The process begins with an initial conversation about your property, goals, timeline, and project scope. From there, we determine the most appropriate next step, whether that involves a site visit, planning study, design services, or construction.
